How do you determine the number of Teams from each challenge that advance to the State Tournament?
Texas DI is the largest affiliate (by a factor of 3) that participates in Destination Imagination. As such we host the largest Affiliate Tournament in Destination Imagination.
Every region is allowed to advance one team per competition level per challenge to the State Tournament. When all 16 regions send teams this almost gives us a full tournament schedule when we allow for possible ties at the regional level. The maximum comfortable number of teams that we can score in a day is about 18 to 20 teams.
Because the large number of teams in many regions, we have adopted the following advancement matrix in order to allow for a better opportunity for teams to advance to the State Tournament. The International Office has given approval for this advancement scheme and allows us to run additional sites at the state tournament based on the number of teams that actually advance to the state tournament.
Number of Teams a Region has competing |
Number of Teams the Region |
1 to 15 teams |
1 team advances |
16 to 30 teams (i.e. 16 Elementary Challenge A Teams) |
2 teams advance |
31 to 45 teams. (i.e. 31 Elementary Challenge A Teams) |
4 teams advance |
46 - 60 teams |
6 teams advance |
every 15 additional teams |
+2 teams advance |
It is up to the region to determine how they will handle the teams at their sites. Some regions may run one site and advance multiple teams from one site or they may run multiple sites.
It is important to note that if a region is running multiple sites for a particular level/challenge, there is no basis for comparing scores between the two sites.
Secondary Level Teams
Each year the Texas DI Executive Board reviews the number of SL teams registered across the state and determines if Regions will be allowed to advance additional Secondary Level teams to the Affiliate Tournament.
